Supporting Equality

The Equality Act came into force on 1 October 2010. It brought together many pieces of legislation into one single Act providing a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all. It protects individuals from discrimination and unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society. The Act protects individuals from being discriminated against, and identifies types of discrimination that individuals are protected from. These are called ‘Protected Characteristics’. It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of:

  • Age
  • Gender reassignment
  • Being married or in a civil partnership
  • Being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • Disability
  • Race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

If you fall into one of the above categories and require help there are many charities, community groups and social enterprises working across Hampshire to support individuals. This directory can be used to help you to identify support in your area.
